Why Jewish Holidays in a Box? – Q&A

Flour and FunIn the past few months, I’ve talked to people from California to Europe who asked us how we “do” Jewish Holidays in a Box. Here are some of the questions we hear most often:

Q: When did you come up with the idea?

A: I started noodling the idea when our girls (now all grown up and fabulous!) were young elementary school age. I wanted to make Jewish holidays more fun, but I didn’t have a lot of personal experience to draw on then, so I made it up as we went along.

Q: Why is your emphasis on simple crafts?

A: I had to find ideas that were easy for me, because I’ve never been a super crafter. For Purim, a costume might be a pillowcase-shaped piece of fabric with holes cut for arms and head. For one Passover long ago, we made a huge Red Sea out of construction paper to separate during the Seder. And Moms and Dads are so busy these days. My focus is on finding ways to support them in building positive family memories – even when they have limited time.

Q: Do you create the products?

A: Yes. I come up with the concepts and copy, then work with a design team to make everything look lovely! Everything is developed with one main goal: to help families and synagogue communities celebrate Jewishly with more joy.

Q: What is the most popular product?

A: So far, launched last spring, our Passover Seder Steps Follow-Along has been the biggest seller. Close behind: Hanukkah Bingo Game and Rosh Hashanah Bingo Game. This past December, we had a blast playing Hanukkah Bingo at a party with a 2-1/2-year-old, an older toddler, a 9-year-old, and a non-English-speaking grandma. Woohoo! Fun for all.

Q: How do you package your products?

A: We are blessed to partner with NW Works, providers of vocational training and employment opportunities for adults with disabilities. A tip of the hat to the wonderful workers there – year around and especially during February, Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month.

Q: Do you sell your games and kits only on Amazon?

A: We sell all of our tangible products through Amazon. Many of our customers are Amazon Prime Members – and they love the free shipping! We also offer discounts to synagogues for fundraisers, gift ships, and community gatherings for larger quantities. Look here for all of  our products available on Amazon.

Q: How do you sell your e-books and other digital products?

A: We sell our e-books and other digital products through our website. This is an easy way for customers to buy, using PayPal or their credit cards.

Q: Are all your products in boxes? Hanukkah fun for the whole family

A: No. We learned that boxed kits make great gifts and are fun to open.  But many families want to build their library of Jewish holiday resources with materials that take up less room, so we came up with a way to package our games in translucent envelopes. We print on aqueous coated card stock, so everything is super durable, but lightweight and space efficient.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I am fine-tuning a Passover Seder reenactment that I hope to share for next year. Fortunately, we’ve got the perfect age little ones and willing adults to test things out.
